Bye, Bye Mr. Wildebeest Guy

One thing that happens when you go on safari is that you see incredible animals. You expect to catch them doing normal things like sleeping and walking around a little. They'll be grazing if they're herbivores. They'll be pooping.

They won't be hunting.

Hunting is one of those things that you see on National Geographic specials, not in real life. Sure, lions have to eat, but you have to wait around for days to see them do it.

Well, someone I was traveling with must've had a gold-plated horseshoe up the rear, since we were crazy lucky and were able to see two lions hunt and kill a wildebeest.

Let's Colour!

The Let's Colour Project has a great idea: turn gray spaces into 'vibrant colour'. It's active in Brazil, India, France, Turkey, and the UK. It should move to America, too!

The Senate Monorail

A friend sent me this link from the Paleo-Future blog; it's pretty cool. The Capitol building used to have a really awesome monorail system. Today, in the passageway between the Capitol and one of the Senate office buildings (the Hart building, maybe?), you can still see one of the original cars. They've replaced the monorail with a more modern trolley thing, which saves congresspeople from any of the office complexes the time and energy of walking.

I Heart My Family

Somehow, my Dad and me putting up Christmas lights turned into a whole family thing...my mom and brother came out to see us and ended up helping with the lights and ornaments. Then we all went in and had hot drinks. It was very Norman Rockwell-esque.

Sweet Tintype from Gettysburg

So, I'm a Civil War reenactor. It's an awesome hobby, and anyone who is interested should contact me about it--I can definitely get you connected. This year, my Dad, my cousin, and I went to the 145th Gettysburg reenactment. As per our usual M.O., we were in the North, so portrayed Confederates. Hopefully this fall we'll be able to go down to Atlanta and be Yankees. Right now I'm dealing with a pretty bad gun malfunction (1862 Richmond...I'm not too pleased with it), so I may be out for the rest of the season. If anyone has a spare (and cheap) 1853 Enfield lying around, let me know.

But, back to Gettysburg. Since it was a national, there were tons of sutlers around, and there were two guys doing ambrotypes and tintypes with all the old equipment. We got a tintype made. I think it turned out really well. See?Three pretty good looking privates from the 44th Tennessee, Co. K, no? I'm the one on the far right.
